Blockworks – Spatial Building, from developer Elastic Sea, takes the appeal of physical block-building toys and translates it directly into your living room. The premise is simple: your actual room becomes the canvas, and you build on your desk, floor or walls using blocks that behave like real objects, colliding with your furniture, your hands and each other in a simulated zero gravity environment.
The app splits into two ways of playing. Blueprint Mode gives you step-by-step guides for constructing specific designs, which is a good entry point if you want the satisfaction of building without the blank-page problem. Sandbox Mode drops the guardrails entirely and hands you an open space to build whatever comes to mind, at whatever scale you choose to work at, whether that means a tabletop diorama or something that fills the room around you. Anchoring lets you lock finished builds into your physical space so they stay put as you walk around them, and the spatial block physics genuinely reacts to your presence — reach into a build and the pieces respond as though they’re really there.
Once you’ve built something you’re happy with, Blockworks doesn’t just let it disappear when you close the app. You can leave builds in your room as ongoing decorations, share them with friends over FaceTime or iMessage, or export models using native USDZ support, which also means you can pull in other players’ USDZ creations and edit them yourself. That kind of interoperability is a nice touch for a spatial building game and points toward actual community sharing rather than a closed sandbox.
At $9.99, Blockworks – Spatial Building sits in that comfortable price range for a well-made creative tool, and the combination of guided building and free-form sandbox play should keep it relevant well past a first afternoon of novelty.
